SEO Has Changed: Why AI SEO Matters Now for Home Service Businesses

Person using a phone and laptop to search online

For years, getting more leads online meant one thing: rank higher on Google. Homeowners typed “roofer near me,” scrolled through ten blue links, and called one of the first few companies they saw. That playbook still matters, but it is no longer the whole game.

Today, more homeowners skip the list of links entirely. They ask ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or Perplexity a direct question, like “Who is the best roofer in Flower Mound?” or “Which HVAC company in Lewisville has the best reviews?”, and the AI answers with a short list of names. If your business is not on that list, you never get the chance to compete for the job.

This shift has a name: AI SEO, also called generative engine optimization (GEO). Here is what changed, why it matters for home service businesses in North DFW, and what you can do about it now.

How homeowners search has changed

Search is moving from “find me some links” to “just tell me who to call.” A few numbers show how fast this is happening:

  • AI is already part of local search. In Yext’s 2026 Consumer Search Behaviors Report, 42.7% of people surveyed had used an AI tool to search for a local business in the past month, and 28% had tried a new local business because an AI recommended it. (Yext)
  • Higher-income homeowners lead the way. Among U.S. respondents with household incomes of $150,000 or more, 54.5% now start their local search with AI instead of Google. These are often the customers planning remodels, new roofs and outdoor living projects. (Yext)
  • Most Google searches no longer end in a click. SparkToro found that 68% of U.S. Google searches ended without a click to any website in early 2026, up from about 60% in 2024. (SparkToro via TechWyse)

In other words, homeowners are getting their answers before they ever reach your website. The question is whether your business is part of that answer.

Google’s AI Overviews now sit above everything else

Even on Google itself, the first thing many people see is no longer a list of websites. It is an AI Overview: a summary written by Google’s AI that appears above the regular results, often naming specific businesses or pointing to a few sources.

That box has a big effect on where attention goes. Pew Research found that when an AI summary appeared, people clicked a regular search result in only 8% of visits, compared with 15% when there was no summary. (Pew Research Center) An Ahrefs study of 300,000 keywords found the top-ranking page now gets about 58% fewer clicks when an AI Overview appears. (Ahrefs via Shopifreaks)

The takeaway: ranking #1 is worth less than it used to be if an AI Overview sits on top of it. Being mentioned inside the AI answer is quickly becoming the new #1.

Why many home service businesses are losing leads without knowing it

Maybe this sounds familiar: “We still rank on Google, but the phone isn’t ringing like it used to.” That is not always a ranking problem. Often, it is a visibility problem in places they are not watching.

  • Homeowners ask an AI assistant who to hire, get three names, and call one of them. Your business never shows up in your analytics because the homeowner never visited your site.
  • Google’s AI Overview answers the question at the top of the page, and fewer people scroll down to the businesses ranking below it.
  • Competitors with clearer websites, more reviews and more consistent listings get recommended by AI more often, even if they are smaller or newer than you.

If your marketing strategy has not changed in the last couple of years, there is a good chance some of your leads are quietly going to someone else.

Traditional SEO vs. AI SEO

Traditional SEO is about ranking a web page in Google’s list of results. AI SEO is about making sure AI tools can find, understand and trust your business enough to recommend it by name.

The two work together. AI tools pull heavily from search results, your Google Business Profile, your reviews and your website. Strong traditional SEO is the foundation, and AI SEO builds on top of it. What changes is the focus:

  • Clarity over keywords. AI tools need to understand exactly what you do, where you do it and who you serve. Vague pages get skipped.
  • Answers over ads copy. Pages that directly answer homeowner questions, such as cost factors, timelines and how to choose a contractor, are more likely to be cited.
  • Consistency everywhere. Your business name, services, service areas and contact details should match on your website, Google Business Profile and every directory.
  • Trust signals. Reviews, real project photos, local mentions and structured data (schema) help AI tools feel confident recommending you.

How fast can AI SEO work?

Traditional Google SEO usually takes months to build momentum, and three to six months is a common timeline before rankings move in a meaningful way. AI search can move faster. Tools like ChatGPT search and Perplexity look up information from the live web when they answer a question, so improvements to your website and listings can start showing up in AI answers within days or weeks, rather than months.

To be clear, no one can honestly guarantee that an AI tool will recommend your business, or exactly when. AI tools decide their own answers. What you can do is remove the obstacles that keep them from recommending you and strengthen the signals they look for. When those pieces are in place, many businesses start to see themselves mentioned far sooner than they would expect from traditional SEO alone.

Why now is the time to start

AI search is still early. Many home service businesses in Flower Mound, Highland Village, Lewisville and across North DFW have not done anything to prepare for it yet. That creates a window.

Think back to when Google Maps first became important for local businesses. The companies that set up and optimized their profiles early built a lead that was hard to catch. AI search is following a similar path. The businesses that become the “trusted answer” now will be much harder to replace once everyone else catches on.

What you can do this month

  1. Ask AI about your own business. Open ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity and ask, “Who is the best [your trade] in [your city]?” Note who gets recommended and whether you appear.
  2. Tighten your Google Business Profile. Check your categories, services, service areas, hours, photos and description. Make sure everything is complete and accurate.
  3. Create clear service and city pages. Give each main service and each core city its own page that explains exactly what you do there.
  4. Answer real homeowner questions. Add FAQs about pricing factors, timelines, materials and how to choose a contractor.
  5. Make your details consistent. Your business name, phone number and service areas should match everywhere they appear online.
  6. Keep earning reviews. Ask happy customers for reviews that mention the service and the city, such as “new cedar fence in Highland Village.”
